It’s very handy. Perfect for Netflix and streaming music. The new generation just dropped recently, too! http://gizmodo.com/chromecast-and…

I love it. I ditched my cable box after I got it because I didn’t use it anymore. A new model was just released so make sure to get that one (it’s circular) instead of the stick one

Yes, we cut cable so it’s a need now, and I love it. You won’t be disappointed

get a Raspberry Pi running Kodi and don’t pay for anything ever again. No netflix needed, no hulu needed, all set for free.

Same here. Ditched cable cause fuck paying all that money for the 3 channels I watched.
Theyre great for Netflix, Youtube, and music from your mobile devices.
Ill probably pick up another one for my other room.

I’ve got one and it works great as long as it has a good connection. I have been using it for about a year with no issues.

I have one but never really use it because I also have a PS4.
I game more than watch stuff. And PS4 streams.
But the Chromecast is pretty cool.

yep you can’t really beat it for the price. If you use amazon prime video, then you might consider the roku stick intead, but otherwise chromecast is the way to go.

If you’re on Amazon Prime, you should get the Amazon TV Stick instead. It’s great and I love it.

Have you done this? My raspberry pi is currently controlling my thermostat, but not well, and not for any reason other than fun. So I would love to re purpose it for this.

I used to do that, but I don’t have anything else running my TV anymore, just the Raspberry Pi/Kodi setup.

Oh hell yeah I have my friend.
Install OSMC, running Kodi.
You want this software (not their overpriced device). You can then run Kodi’s standard view off of it.
I don’t have cable anymore. I don’t pay for Netflix. I watch sports through add ons, I even have an HD HomeRun taking my antenna onto the network so I can get live over the air HD broadcast through the Pi as well.
Suck it cable

Cool, I’ll give it a whirl. Do you have an IR receiver sensor for the Pi, or how are you controlling?

Never heard of it.
What’s the content source?...quick look shows it’s just a MC.
Scanning further down...it’s just the newest rev of XBMC?

we actually use a wireless keyboard with a touchpad. Wife (not techy) is completely cool with using the whole system btw.

yep. XBMC turned into Kodi.
It’s all internet based, so you pull content from streams.
I fully admit every once in a while you get a bad stream or two. you back out of it and pick a new stream and it’ll even pick up where you left off.

It’s great, pretty much the same features as a smart TV. Just remember that you need an audio out on your TV if you use an external amp.

Ahhh, so grey to black market then.
I still have an old HTPC running some forever ago version of XBMC for network streaming, but gave up on the black market stuff when the legit stuff got satisfactory. I may even have my old original XBox running an even older version up in the attic...I wonder what’s on that hard drive...

My uncle recently bought one. He LOVES IT. He uses it to watch Cantonese movies and German television.
he keeps telling me to purchase one, but I have no time to watch television.

Gotcha, I’ve got a really nice universal remote that I would be looking to incorporate. Receivers are cheap though I’m sure that I can work it out.

If you get one, go for the new one which is supported by apps like Spotify (who elected not to support the first gen...)

If you have a smartphone you can
download Kore
and control Kodi that way, I haven’t run into any problems with it.

Yup. Its great considering the cost. I do wish it worked better with apple though. I'll sometimes find something on my tablet, then pull it up on my phone to cast it.

Haha, well the old xbox can’t keep up with this new software, they don’t support it anymore, it’s one of the reasons they changed the name from xbmc to Kodi.
I’d list it as grey market, it’s not illegal to stream content, only to be the streamer.
An old HTPC may keep up with current Kodi. It’s just all free and there’s so rarely a show or movie I can’t find. Shows are loaded up same day sometimes as air date but I always wait a day for a better stream or watch it live with my antenna (or a live stream).
It’s worked out great for us.
